Cato Van Rijckeghem (°1996, BE) lives and works in Ghent. She graduated from KASK School of Arts in Ghent with her work Our life is full of sunshine about a generation of young women who were born in China during the one-child policy.
The photographer captures the consequences of China's one-child policy in a nuanced and sensitive way. From a collection of letters, audio and images, the photographer focuses on everyday realities, a sense of lack and rejection and the collective loneliness experienced by the generation of women who grew up in China.
Furthermore, Cato is showing for the first time a selection from her new work, Daughters. In recent years, family dynamics and care changed within the five members of her family: three daughters, their father and their mother. As part of the work, she made cut-outs of photographs from the collective archive to simplify and transform them. Little remains of the image, but it never loses its origin.
